Super Bowl Drinks For Island Time Radio

The big game is coming up in a few days!  Here are some cocktails to honor the teams and their host cities.

Kansas City Ice Water
1.5 oz vodka
1.5 oz gin
1 can 7-Up

Pour all ingredients over ice in a tall glass.   Also tastes yummy when disguised in a red dixie cup.

Citywide Special
One shot of whiskey and a beer

Philly lore is that the Citywide Special started at Bob and Barbara’s on South St in Philly where “The Special” was Beam and PBR for $3.

Hail To The Chiefs
1.5 oz Crown Royal Apple
4 oz cranberry juice
splash of grenadine
lemon twist

Pour all ingredients over ice and stir.

Hail To The Chiefs
1.5 oz vodka
.5 oz blue curacao
pineapple juice

Pour all ingredients over ice and stir. Experiment with the amount of juice to get the color just right.

My favorite Mint Julep recipe

My favorite Mint Julep recipe comes from Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Henry Watterson:

Pluck the mint gently from its bed, just as the dew of the evening is about to form upon it . Prepare the simple syrup and measure out a half-tumbler of whiskey. Pour the whiskey into a well-frosted silver cup, throw the other ingredients away and drink the whiskey.

41 Cocktails In 41 Days: The Mamie Taylor

I really thought I would enjoy the Mamie Taylor more, since I enjoy whiskey.  Ultimately, it fell flat for me.  Maybe it would be better with a different Scotch.

In 41 Days, I will turn 41 years old.  Until then, I am trying a new cocktail everyday.

Day Five:  Mamie Taylor
2 oz scotch
3 oz ginger-ale
1/2 oz fresh lime juice

Build over ice.

Whiskey Wednesday: Jim Beam Rye

Whiskey Wednesday:  Jim Beam Rye

This week’s whiskey is Jim Beam® Rye.  Drier and spicier than its sweet Bourbon cousins, Rye adds character and depth to any whiskey cocktail. Pairs especially well with fruit flavors.  This whiskey is clean and spicy, with a peppery taste and a slight sweetness.

While I enjoy this whiskey on its own, it also makes a great Manhattan!

Jim Beam® Rye Manhattan
2 oz Jim Beam® Rye
1/2 oz sweet vermouth
dash of bitters
cherry for garnish

Chill a cocktail (martini) glass with ice.   In a mixing glass half filled with ice add whiskey, vermouth, and a dash of bitters.   Stir until well-chilled.  Dump the ice from the prepared glass and strain in the contents of the mixing glass.   Drop a cherry in for garnish and enjoy!

Drink Recipe: Water Moccasin

I had the pleasure of serving “Kiki” & “K-Wow” from LaGrange, GA on Independence Day. They were good fun and easy on the eyes, so I even forgave them when they ordered mojitos on the busiest day of the year in my bar. They introduced me to a shot that I had never made, the Water Moccasin. I promised them I would feature the shot, so here you go!

Water Moccasin
1 1/4 oz Crown Royal® Canadian whiskey
1/2 oz peach schnapps
1/2 oz sour mix

Shake with ice and strain into an oversized shot glass. Enjoy, but be careful. This snake has bite!

Kiki and K-Wow were visiting from out of town when they happened upon the Golden Lion. They were also fans of Bend Me Over.
