Celebrate Repeal Day!

12647240_10154293106467923_4895970920695363372_nSince 2006, I have been recognizing Repeal Day.  I was inspired by my bar brother in the PNW, Jeffrey Morganthaler.   When I first started, people thought I made it up.  But it caught on over time.  Today, people will be celebrating from DC to Chicago to LA

We will be celebrating tonight at The Humidor Cigar Bar & Lounge in Palm Coast,  beginning at 7:00pm with a ceremonial reading of the 21st Amendment.

The Humidor, located in European 1235349_10152354813937923_271916993_nVillage, is a classic space boasting leather, dark woods, and a fantastic vibe.   Guests are encouraged to dress in the attire of the era (1
0% Discount On EVERYTHING for those dressed for the occasion).    In addition, Anchor Steam Beer will be $2 all day.  Anchor Steam is a pre-prohibition brew from San Francisco.

Wherever you are, I encourage you to celebrate your constitutional right to have a drink.   Cheers!

A Little Bit About Steelhead Double IPA

Steelhead Double IPA comes to us from Mad River Brewing  in Humboldt County, California.   Malty, hoppy and robust, Double IPA is dry hopped with Amarillo hops for a fresh piney and citrus flavor and aroma. Aggressively hopped, but perfectly balanced.  This is one of those weird IPAs that I (a stout drinker) have great appreciation for.   At 8.6% ABV and 95 IBU, this brew is not for the faint of palate.   The balance is what makes it great, in my opinion.

I featured this beer as part of Craft Beer Week  last year at The Humidor Cigar Bar & Lounge in Palm Coast.

madriverbrewery

Today (Wednesday) only, I am running this beer on special for $2.50.  That’s PBR price, people.  A perfect opportunity to try something new!

It all started with a stranger walking up to the bar and asking “Aren’t you that TikiTender guy from Myspace?”

Why Do We Celebrate National Beer Day On April 7th?

April 7 is National Beer Day!   While I’m in favor of beer on any day, I’m always ready for a good tale from history.
.

As we all know, the Volstead Act made the production of intoxicating beverages illegal in the United States.   Every year on December 5, I recognize Repeal Day as the day the 21st Amendment was ratified and prohibition was repealed.   bdg_nationalbeerday2016_lg

But, that was December 5th.  Why do we celebrate National Beer Day in April.   Well, in the early part of 1933 folks realized what an economic disaster prohibition had become and began trying to ease it back.   On March 22, 1933 President Franklin Roosevelt signed an amendment to the Volstead Act, making it legal to produce beer (albeit 3.2% or less) in the United States again.   Upon signing the Cullen-Harrison Act, Roosevelt declared “I think this would be a good time for a beer.”

This new law went into effect a few weeks later, on April 7th.    Now let’s have a beer!
